Do you ever feel like you’re lacking spirit, motivation and get-up-and-go? Um, you and me both!
So, what do we do when we feel this way?
I was recently reading about what causes motivation; the kind of motivation that makes us feel excited and inspired.
Motivation, “they’ve” learned, is a skill. It’s more like reading, or writing, or math – it’s NOT a thing that some people have it and some people don’t. MOTIVATION CAN BE LEARNED.
Over a few decades, a series of neurological tests were done on test subjects who seemed to have lost their drive to be productive.
These people weren’t depressed, just lacking in motivation.
They tried medication and therapy, but nothing seemed to make a difference.
The doctors set up a game for the test patients, and studied their brain activity as the patients played the game.
The game was a boring one – just involved guessing a number between 1 and 10.
What the doctors observed was interesting: Each time the patients GOT TO GUESS – their brains lit up.
The patients reported feelings of excitement each time they guessed, even though they knew the outcome was irrelevant and there was no skill or strategy involved.
These tests were then applied to real areas of the patients’ lives. Same thing.
CHOICE = PLEASURE.
The conclusion of the doctors?
Motivation comes from the feeling that YOU ARE IN CONTROL.
If you are feeling stuck, unmotivated, or stagnant, TRY TO MAKE A POSITIVE CHOICE today. Any choice to start. Ideally something that will improve the quality of your life.
Decide what to do about the friend you are feeling a little annoyed with.
Decide if you should throw away all that junk in your closet that you’ve been avoiding.
Decide whether or not you want to take that class.
Try to look at your life as a series of DECISIONS instead of a bunch of COMMANDS.
The choices we make are less important than what making the choice gives us – the feeling of control, a feeling that we are in charge of our own lives.
THAT is what’s going to get us going.
The feeling of being in control of your life at that moment will likely light something up in YOUR brain.
And that feeling can lead to the motivation.
And the motivation leads to the productivity.
You ARE in control.
You got this.
