We live in L.A.
That means every day is a vacation, right?
Well, while there is some truth to that, it’s still important to get out of town every now and then.
A change of scenery can do wonders for your creative spirit.
If I can remind you why you’re here.
It can calm your nerves.
FOR ACTORS, GETTING OUT OF TOWN EVERY NOW AND THEN IS IMPERATIVE.
Here are some of my favorites:
#1: SANTA BARBARA
The drive is just over an hour. Have lunch at the super divey but super delicious La Super Rica. Go for a walk on the beach and if you have a dog bring him/her along – Santa Barbara has one of the few dog-free beaches in SoCal. http://lasuperricataqueria.galeriasmetepec.co/
Have brunch at one of the adorable shops in The Country Mart and pretend you’re a tourist. Walk across the street and stroll along the beach. If you can afford it, have dinner at Nobu (make reservations months in advance). http://www.malibucountrymart.com/
It’s hard to explain what makes Ojai so special until you go there. The town is small and charming and it’s only about an hour and a half drive from LA. Think about a guided horseback ride while you’re there.
#4: LAGUNA BEACH
An hour drive from L.A., this beach town is artsy and beautiful. Spend the day strolling in and out of shops, dropping into a gallery or two, and sipping a latte at a sidewalk café.
#5: PALM SPRINGS
if you like the desert, this is the place for you. Go in the late fall and winter since it’s too hot in the summer. If an overnight is a possibility, The 29 Palms Inn is a SoCal institution. Located right next to Joshua Tree, 29 Palms Inn is funky and reasonable. http://www.29palmsinn.com/
Get your kid on and spend a day at Disney with a friend. Your 7-year-old niece doesn’t need to be visiting for you to justify a day with Mickey. Friendly Tip: Try to go when the L.A. kids are in school! Avoid holidays, Obvi.
#7: APPLE PICKING
This is a great L.A. day trip. Most of the good places are about a 2 hour drive out of town but you’ll feel like you’re in another world indeed. http://rileysfarm.com/
#8: SAN DIEGO
About two hours from L.A., this is a little bit more of a drive than the others, but once you get there, you’ll be glad you went. My favorite thing to do in San Diego? Drive over to Coronado Island and rent bikes to ride around the picturesque island.
#9: SANTA MONICA PIER
Spend the day eating cotton candy, riding the ferris wheel, and renting yourself some rollerblades. You’re still in LA, but you’ll get that day-trip feeling without even having to schlep. http://santamonicapier.org/
#10: EL CAPITAN CAMPGROUND
Feeling a need to get your GLAMP on? It doesn’t get any better than El Capitan. A quick two hour drive from the city and you’re deep in the woods (with the beautiful Pacific across the street). It isn’t cheap (as camping goes) but it’s a killer escape from the fast pace of L.A. life. http://www.elcapitancanyon.com/
